LandScape in the June issue

Bring every season to life in your home with evocative content, delicious recipes, inspirational gardens, step-by-step craft projects and much more

by Holly Duerden |

The longed-for season of languorous days has finally arrived as June gently drifts in with its pervading warmth. Sunny hours stretch ahead in which to enjoy the colour of the garden and spend more time outdoors. Now is the perfect opportunity to explore an ancient village between moor and sea, tucked beneath a fairy-tale castle, or to walk among the wildlife on a finger of land stretching into the sea beyond the golden sands of the Yorkshire coast.

At an apricot-hued former rectory, the legacy of a renowned rose expert is everywhere to be seen in an English country garden. The Shropshire home of David Austin Jnr is surrounded by sumptuous petals in a confection of shades, filling the air with sweet perfume.

Cool-green hostas, with leaves the size of plates, add lushness to shady borders, and fluted mauve-blue and ice-white campanulas make for dainty arrangements. A sphere of succulents forms a luscious hanging display, and craft-lovers can replicate delicate wild blooms in crinkled paper.

Longer evenings are whiled away stitching a wall panel from snippets of treasured fabric in a project to return to again and again, and an artist reveals how her patterns are inspired by nature around her. Learn, too, about life in the slow lane for the most familiar of snails as it uses its senses to survive and thrive.

Sharply sweet gooseberries plucked from the bushes add tang to desserts and condiments, and ruby redcurrant beads make a refreshing sorbet as the temperature rises. And for tasty, light suppers, fluffy rice comes to the fore in a variety of dishes, just right for summer.
